Fascinated since childhood with commonalities between peoples and cultures, Steven devoted much of his youth to studying comparative religion, mythology, and music. His previous musical work, Sapient: A Cantata of Peace, focused on teachings of peace and the unity of humankind — teachings that various world traditions hold in common.
Steven has composed the scores for over 300 episodes of prime-time, network shows and 17 theatrical films including: Batman: the Animated Series (nominated by the International Film Music Critics’ Association), Family Man, Family Matters, Getting By, Girls Across the Lake, Hangin’ with Mr. Cooper, The Hogan Family, Kirk, Life Happens, Perfect Strangers, Step by Step, Two of a Kind, Valerie, LA Times Critics’ Pick Zen Noir, Determined, The Trip, and No Turning Back.
Steven’s recordings have received numerous awards for outstanding achievement from ASCAP, Billboard, the USA Songwriting Competition, the International Songwriting Competition, the International Music and Entertainment Awards, the Clouzine Music Awards, the Radio Music Awards, USC Thornton, the ZMR Awards, the Global Peace Song Awards, the International Film Music Critics Association, the Global Music Awards, the Hollywood Music in Media Awards, and the John Lennon Songwriters’ Awards.
The Indiefest Film Festival honored Steven with the Award for Excellence for a Music Score, and the Garden City Film Festival awarded him with 1st Prize for Best Orchestration for a Music Score, the Global Film Awards-Impact Doc Awards honored him with the Award for Excellence for a Music Score, and the Docs Without Borders Film Festival awarded him with the Award for Outstanding Excellence in a Music Score for his score for Determined.
More recent awards include: the Grand Prize from the John Lennon Song Awards, the Platinum Award for Album of the Year by the LIT Music Awards, Best Album by the Indie Music Channel Awards, the Clouzine International Music Awards, and current finalist in the World Songwriting Awards, the Unsigned only Awards, the WAM Awards, the Elite Music Awards and the Anthem Awards.
Mix Magazine (August 1995), First Reflection Magazine (Fall 1994, vol.7-1), and NPR’s All Things Considered (host Gene Parrish, 91.5 KUSC FM) devoted an entire segment to Steven’s recordings of his Symphony #2 and Symphony #3, which were the world’s first recordings of an extended symphonic concert work for 80 players, recorded multi-track, using then nascent multi-track digital technology.
