Stay in Your Lane is a deeply personal and investigative documentary that highlights the high price women of colour pay for justice in a society shaped by systemic inequalities. As a journalist, I have spent years reporting on the complexities of race, gender, and power. However, it was through the lens of this documentary that I truly understood the profound impact of these issues on the lives of women of colour in Australia.
In this project, I set out to explore not only the personal struggles but also the institutional barriers that hinder these women from accessing justice, whether in the courtroom, in the workplace, or in everyday life. Through candid interviews and powerful storytelling, I aimed to create a space where these voices could be heard, where the experiences of these women could be shared, and where we could begin to challenge the structures that uphold such injustice.
Stay in Your Lane is a call to action, an invitation to examine the ways in which society and its systems work against those who are already marginalised. This film is not just an exploration—it is a conversation starter, a tool for sparking important dialogues about race, power, and the need for real change. My goal as a director was to amplify the voices of these women, not to speak for them, but to ensure their stories are seen, heard, and felt.
As the founder of Back Cover Media, I have always believed in the power of in-depth, nuanced storytelling. Stay in Your Lane is a reflection of that commitment—an opportunity to challenge the status quo and inspire action towards a more just and equitable world.
