Introducing The Play, an unprecedented form of televised drama. 
The Play is neither a traditional play nor a reading performance. It is a standing drama, a totally new form of plays. Some of the most important theatrical factors, including costumes, props, makeup, and movements, have been excluded, leaving only the actors’ facial expressions, controlled breathing, voices, and subtle gestures to fill the stage. 
The show presents six dramas based on four scripts and two stories. They include fragments of the lives of people who have been affected by the COVID-19 pandemic and can be interpreted differently by different people. You won’t be able to take your eyes off them once you start watching.

◉ A Unique From of Experimental Drama Made Up of Nothing but Actors and Stories 
After selecting compelling scripts through a public competition, the goal was to present them in a way that enables viewers to focus only on the in-depth acting. To achieve this, the production crew put the actors on stage without any conventional theater props, lit only by small spotlights. They filmed each scene four times using eight cameras and 32 different angles, later adding minimal captions and graphics. 
The Play presents itself in a form that is completely unfamiliar to the viewers and actors, as well as to the production crew. However, it gives viewers the opportunity to immerse themselves in the production, offering them a rare chance to see the subtle facial expressions, breathing, and gestures of actors in a way that isn’t possible even from the front row of a theater.

◉ Simultaneous Production of Video and Audio Content, Expanding to Diverse Platforms 
The program produces both video and audio content and is designed to be aired on a variety of online platforms. For this reason, each episode is only 15 minutes long, which is a rarity in modern broadcasting. As for the audio content, Foley sound effects have been added to help people to enjoy the drama without any visuals. The final version of the program has been broadcast through a variety of media, including television, radio, YouTube, and Facebook. Audiences in each format have indicated that it was a new and enjoyable experience for them. The average television rating was 2.7%, putting it at the top of its time slot. On YouTube, it got more than 5,000 hits in the first three weeks after it was uploaded, and it has been receiving increasing online attention. This positive feedback illustrates the program’s potential as a unique content genre.

◉ Selected from a Script Competition: Drama Content Created by Citizens 
The Play uses scripts selected from a public competition. The four scripts and two stories that were selected out of about 100 entries have diverse subjects: two men who dream of traveling to Berlin; a woman who unexpectedly quits being a mother; and an elderly woman with dementia who tries to escape a sanatorium in order to see her son. The scripts were written by ordinary people, which helps viewers sympathize more deeply with the characters. Since the program was partly created by citizens, an audiobook that consists of the audio clips of The Play is available at no charge.

◉ Awarded by the Korean Producer & Directos Association 
The Play have been awarded ‘Producer of the Month by the Korean Producers & Directors Association’ in 2021.

Director Biography - Minju Bae, Jaeseob Hwang

[Jaeseob Hwang 
/ Producer & Director]

Jaeseob Hwang has produced and directed many television shows for the Taegu Broadcasting Corporation (TBC) since 2004.
TBC is a local terrestrial broadcasting corporation (channel 19) whose range covers the city of Taegu and the province of North Gyeongsang in South Korea. It produces and transmits press, documentary, educational, entertainment, and sports programs.
In addition, it also provides services on FM radio and Digital Multimedia Broadcasting. 
Hwang has made a wide variety of TV programs, including documentaries and features. He is also an award-winning producer and director whose films have premiered to great acclaim at prestigious film festivals and have been awarded the Grand Prize by the Korea Communications Commission.

[Minju Bae / Producer & Director]

Born and raised in South Korea. She joined a theater troupe and did plays during her childhood and university life.
After her bachelor’s degree, she worked as TV producer and director in TBC (Taegu Broadcasting Company of South Korea). Within this TV Broadcasting Company, she produced and directed several TV shows and TV documentary.
Her recent TV documentary, Our Record About COVID 19 won the This month’s Best TV program by Korea Communications Standards Commission. In addition, her experience as a Theater director or actor in the past prompted her to create and develop a new genre of a play or drama like this standing drama.
