Jack Hill is an award winning 18-year-old writer/director living in the Brighton area of South East England. He is incredibly passionate about film, currently studying a double BTEC Creative Digital Media course at BHASVIC sixth form college in Brighton. He has written and directed numerous films, with previous credits like "Small Talk" and "Suburbia" screened at multiple festivals, reaching the spot of finalist, and even winning an 'IntoFilm film of the month' award. He also writes numerous stage-plays, with his recent stage-play '60 Seconds And Counting' adapted and performed on 6 occasions in 6 different venues for the Worthing Theatre Trail. His films have been shown to a large audience; including festivals in both Scotland and India.
When writing "Stand-Up Stanley", I approached the plot as a sort of argument, structuring the film around this argument; an argument for ambition… and an argument for doubt. As an ambitious/passionate individual, I often feel as though my personality is somewhat torn in two during times of crisis - a part of me telling to move onward, to follow my dreams...
and a part of me telling me to give up, it's not worth it, fall back...
I find this concept fascinating; not quite a split personality, for these personalities often intertwine, they often find harmony or mutually agree to disagree, and yet I always found myself antagonising the doubt within myself. I saw it as some overwhelming force just waiting to consume me. And yet, there was something human about this peculiar argument within my mind - the doubt that grounds us in life and the ambition that makes life worth living, battling each other endlessly.
All this eventually lead me to the idea of “Stand-Up Stanley”, the personification of this psychological battle I find myself propelled into, and I simply find it enthralling (as I hope you do too.) And, after almost 5 months of drafting, and redrafting, and redrafting, my incredibly talented cast and crew and myself set to work on attempting to adapt this idea to the big screen; working with incredible equipment and challenging yet gorgeous sets/locations, we managed to craft a film which I believe presents this peculiar and yet undeniably human psychological argument in a unique and heartfelt manner. We are all students, and this film was a college project, so our resources were limited, as was our time, and yet I am incredibly pleased with this finished film, and incredibly proud of my immensely talented cast and crew. I hope you enjoy our film, and I thank you for watching :)
