Director Statement

With this short film, I wanted to explore the vulnerability of women, for better or for worse, through their words and their physical expressions. A small scale story with big emotions.
In today’s climate audiences want to see stories of people who are less represented told by those whose stories they are. As a queer woman, I felt the need to tell a story showing how explosive, intimate and sometimes harsh women can be when together. This is achieved by depicting and contrasting a relationship along two timelines, showing it at its highest and lowest points.
Filmed in London in August 2020 during the covid 19 pandemic, this intimate film was shot with a very small crew on location, on a tiny budget of under £2K. I’m incredibly grateful to the time and expertise given by the brilliant - majority female - team who made Stagger the best it could be under challenging conditions.
‘Stagger’ is a proof of concept for a feature film, now in development. Off the back of global successes like Carol, Portrait of A Lady on Fire and Ammonite, this feels like the perfect time to move forward with a nuanced, powerful LGBTQ+ piece. - Céline.
