Director Biography - Kate Haley

Kate Haley is an award-winning writer/director from Ireland. She was awarded the prestigious Fulbright Scholarship to study in the U.S. and is currently finishing an MFA in Film & TV at the Savannah College of Art and Design. Her short film "A Death in the Family" won Best Irish Short at the Disappear Here Film Festival, Best Cinematography at the WFT Short Film Showcase, and was selected to screen as part of the CIACLA Irish Short Reels Series in L.A. Kate was chosen by the Regional Cultural Centre and Donegal Film Office in collaboration with the Arts Council of Ireland to showcase work as one of Donegal’s leading early-career filmmakers. As an identical twin, she has been collaborating her whole life. Her stories find strength in the fragility of the human experience. She finds power in her characters perceived weaknesses and tells stories that challenge and subvert an audience's expectations.

Director Statement

"Splash!" explores an internal battle that so many of us grow up facing. It is about a woman’s view on her body, marked by her upbringing and her childhood experience of the male gaze. It tells a contemporary story where new technology further objectifies us. It depicts one woman’s daily struggle to feel confident in her body. "Splash!" is a quiet film about breaking free from the boxes we put ourselves in, even just for a day. The film makes space for self-reflection. With "Splash!" I wanted to take a more nuanced look at body issues and the invisible barriers that they create no matter how we are perceived on the outside. Adrianna breaks the cycle of fear and the film ends with her returning to the place where she had felt most vulnerable. It is an empowering and poetic take on an issue that is close to my heart.
