Mariia Lukianchuk is an interdisciplinary artist from Ukraine. She currently studies Interdisciplinary Arts at ZUYD University of Applied Sciences in Maastricht, The Netherlands. Her work lies on the intersection of drawing and painting, writing, film and stop motion.
Being brought up and mainly influenced by women, I grew up with a different perception of femininity. The image of women was the one that could pose a threat, could create a shelter, could haunt me and could save me, it was a big force of life and death. In my teens, I did not feel any connection to my feminine side and rather blocked that part of me; later on it found me and it asked for being noticed, for taking its place, and I realised that the conflict was on the border of inner and outer: my deep perceptions of femininity were not the ones of a society I was brought up in. Once I got deeper into the topic and connected my intuitive image with an archetypal one, I had realised how distorted, how oppressed the image that still lives in our society is. Since then, this question has been one I haven’t been able to ignore, could not keep in silence; femininity took its place in me and in my art.
The film has a circular structure and, as a myth, shows the journey inside through portraying it with the help of outside actions. Therefore every object in the film appears as a character and a tool, necessary for creating your own shelter and hunt. The film brings a viewer through symbolic stations, gathering pieces on the way.
