Amber Gray started her career as a photographer shooting celebrities like Beyonce, Selena Gomez, Grimes, Penelope Cruz, John Turturro, Courtney Love, Roisin Murphy, Victoria Monet, and ad campaigns for Sony, Maybelline, Mont Blanc, W Hotels amongst others.
Her hyper focus on visual storytelling and creating voluptuous atmospheres made it a natural transition to directing
where her singular aesthetic, sense of humor, and poetic heart merge to create uniquely haunting films.
I have always been a lover of nature, and in a perpetual state of heartbreak over the ways in which we humans treat the world around us. Mass extinctions, pollution, and overpopulation loom large in my mind every day. I wanted to tell a story that could highlight the absurdity of human behavior, and the ludicrousness of human values, while also giving light to the voluptuous beauty and grandeur of the natural world. The central characters in this story represent archetypes that are ever present in society, literature, and even social media. Who hasn't met a striver like Alisdair? Watching, cataloging, and calculating his every move for maximum social benefit, or watched in helpless horror as consequential decisions were made by ancient entities, who seem so far removed from the real world, one genuinely wonders "what they're on". These characters have populated my mind for years, and I am so happy and relieved to let them out, to show the world all their beauty, intelligence, vacuity, and ridiculousness. This film is a celebration of nature and a critique of our values. It is an attempt to animate hope, to entertain, and most of all, to create meaningful moments that will stick with audiences long after the credits roll.
