As a young queer female director, I often face people who do not take my work seriously. Reflecting on this, I wanted to make a film about a young woman who takes her work extremely seriously, even if it seems ridiculous to those around her. A few months later, I wrote “Special Delivery” about a foley artist for pornography.
I chose pornography to showcase artists on the fringes of the film industry and to examine the difference between intimacy and sex. The main characters, Sandy and Tad, work with sex on screen daily. However, they are more alone than ever in a work environment that does not see them as true artists. Tad’s most vulnerable moment is not in the pornography film, but when he asks for Sandy’s help with his line delivery. When Sandy lets Tad in on her sound recording process, she opens up a sacred piece of herself. Instead of touching, it is their shared passion for filmmaking that creates meaningful intimacy. Furthermore, I wanted to explore a traditional romantic-comedy structure in a very non-traditional setting. Through a classic enemy-to-lovers trope, Sandy pushes Tad away until she realizes that she has feelings for him.
It was a great pleasure and privilege to work with one of the best foley artists in the business, Marko Costanzo. Marko, along with George Lara and Paul Hsu with C5 Inc, welcomed our production into their foley studio. These masters of sound taught me about the art of foley and ADR. To properly tell Sandy’s story, I needed a work environment that resembled the real process. Their passion, kindness, and willingness to share their spaces and props with our production created a remarkable authenticity to our film.
Ultimately, "Special Delivery" is a unique romantic comedy for people who do not feel seen but finally meet their match. While Sandy finds romantic love, I have found an incredible community of filmmakers who believe in my art. All I needed to do was open myself up and share my work. This project was made possible only with the support of our NYC-based cast and crew and New Jersey location. We are so excited to share it with audiences in hopes that it encourages viewers to let go of their strict routines and let someone in… you might even fall in love ;)
