Space Age
Space Age follows two immigrant teenagers Ibo, from Syria, and Ali, from Pakistan who find themselves in a neglected internet café on the edges of Istanbul. Ali longs to video chat with his ill mother back home. Ibo, impulsive and restless, discovers a webcam chat left open on a nearby computer. As Ali waits for a connection to his past, Ibo dives headfirst into the digital illusion of intimacy with a stranger on screen. The film unfolds over a single, charged moment where silence, spectacle, and the yearning for contact collide.

I was born in Hakkari, a remote city in the southeast of Turkey, in 1989. The first time I ever touched a computer was in a crowded internet café.
For me, technology doesn’t create a universal experience it amplifies the differences. The so-called Space Age might sound like a global era, but depending on where you’re born, the way you enter it, or whether you’re allowed in at all, varies drastically.
In my first film, I wanted to recreate that strange, tense atmosphere: the mix of wonder, isolation, and constraint that comes with living on the margins of both society and progress. The immigrant boys in the film represent the emotional and physical claustrophobia I often felt growing up in peripheral places. The café owner, by contrast, symbolizes power, gatekeeping, and control.
Space Age is small in scale, but its themes are vast: belonging, visibility, and the silent systems that decide who gets to connect and who doesn't.
