Arirang - Sound Memories Series.

The "Sound Memories Series" short films by sound and multimedia artist Julio César Palacio, are captures of uniques moments that lead to new narratives and sonic interactions.

Arirang

Arirang, is the first of the series and the one that inspires it.
During a long cab ride that the artist took on Jeju Island, South Korea, to visit the Manjanggul Lava Tube, perhaps due to the length of the trip and the impossibility of the cab driver to speak to his passenger, the driver began to sing to him throughout the journey.

Arirang is a traditional Korean lyrical folk song that is recreated and transmitted orally, and with which the cab driver delighted me throughout the trip.
First a capella and then with an instrument while driving through a difficult, curvy and narrow bumpy road. There is a special feeling and great pride with which the cab driver interprets them, wanting to show the client this ancestral song of his land.

Director Biography - Julio César Palacio

Julio Cesar Palacio's work has a very organic and exploratory approach that is reflected in the variety of formats and forms of representation that he uses in each of his projects, since he does not seek a defined materiality, construction, or object, but rather, it is inspired by the search for new possibilities to listen and envision our existence in relation to the earth and nature. He understands that his artistic creation is not linked to his personal growth and development, but to the relationship and interaction that it acquires when it is shared with the community.

His practice focuses on the research and study of acoustic phenomena, the expansion of the range of human auditory perception, the spatialization of sound, decolonial and non-western perspectives on sound and listening, the relationship of sound in identity and collective memory, oral history, noise pollution and the impact of humans on nature, the study of bioacoustics and the analysis of sound DATA as material for awareness and conservation of the environment and its soundscape, understood in the context of today's climate crisis and instability.
