Sophie Meehan is a filmmaker, poet and multidisciplinary artist from Dublin. As a writer/director she is one half of Fishty Fagan Films, along with producer Aoife Derwin. Sophie's shorts A Little Bird Told Me (2025), Young People of Ireland (2023) and Monday to Friday Person (2020) introduce us to some of the unseen members of society. Her work explores social realities through a poetic lense, using humour as an entry-point.
In A Little Bird Told Me (2025), a teenage girl caring for her seriously ill father attempts to contact the spirit of rock star Phil Lynott- to prove to her dad that there’s life beyond death. The short stars newcomer Ella Rooney and seasoned Irish actor Alan Devine (Vikings: Valhalla, The Tudors, Veronica Guerin). A Little Bird Told Me was funded and produced under the National Talent Academy' for Film &TV’s First Credit Short Film Scheme; a new production avenue for promising early-career filmmakers which aims to support diverse voices in the Irish film industry. A Little Bird Told Me was inspired by Sophie's experiences caring for a parent. The film debuted to an enthusiastic audience response at Dublin International Film Festival.
Sophie’s sophomore short, Young People of Ireland, follows two young women who decide to boycott Pope John Paul II's visit to Dublin in 1979. It was produced by Aoife Derwin (Breeders, Sapphire, Sparkle) and stars Irish acting talents Gemma Kane (Community Watch, TWIG) and Bebhinn Hunt-Sheridan (Just an Illusion). The film enjoyed success on the festival circuit with official selections at Galway Film Fleadh, Toronto Irish Film Festival, Female Filmmaker’s Festival Berlin, Atlanta Women’s Film Festival, Cannes Indie Shorts and Directed by Her. It earned nominations for Best Drama and Best Costume at Atlanta Women’s Film Festival.
Sophie’s debut short was a lo-fi self-funded absurdist take on the Irish housing crisis; Monday to Friday Person. The film starred Lloyd Cooney (Deadly Cuts, Kin) and Andrea Kelly (Joyriders, Scope). Monday to Friday Person debuted with an official selection at Kerry International Film Festival and remains a popular screening at DIY experimental film events such as FanVid Film Club.
