Director Biography - Akshay Chauhan

Akshay Chauhan is an independent filmmaker and producer based in Shimla, India. Coming from a small Himalayan town, and a background in journalism and media operations, his work is driven by an interest in human relationships and quiet irony. He explores stories that balance humour with underlying drama, often focusing on flawed characters and moral ambiguity.

Director Statement

Sophie began as a simple idea about how far could a woman go to retaliate once her husband would've pushed her too far but quickly evolved into a story about control, denial, and emotional survival within a marriage. I was interested in exploring what happens when a narcissist and patricarch husband is challenged by his obedient and submissive wife.

Rather than approaching the subject as a pure drama, I chose to treat it as a comedy drama. Humour, for me, often emerges from discomfort, and also inevdiently shows the plight of women in India.

The cat and mouse dynamic between the husband and wife allowed me to explore how power within a relationship can change without a single confrontation.
