Director Statement

When I originally set out to create this film, it was only intended to take a week and to fill out a spot in my portfolio. It has since become my most intensive project, being done by only me and Katja Solter. This two-person production has become the work I am most proud of.

The film itself is about loss. I wanted to make a movie about how disorienting loss and love can be, and the method I used was very experimental. I tried to limit the dialogue (the original draft of the script didn’t have any dialogue at all!), but I realized that it isn’t effective or emotional without the dialogue at the end.

For the aesthetic of the film, I attempted to create a very uneasy atmosphere through the color grade. I did high contrast, bold lighting and intense color grades. I think the most striking shot I have is the one in the hallway, with an incredibly overbearing blue. I also made the costume myself, and I bought herbal cigarettes for it. I even made the best instrumental music I’ve ever made for this film. I took immense care in the production to make it beautiful, intriguing and hopefully clear as to what happens and when.

The key point I am trying to convey is loss, again. I want to showcase the rawness and disassociation and confusion of loss. I sincerely hope that people who view this will enjoy and be moved by this film.
