Solace
In the summer of 2020, ConteXture dance Detroit searched for creative ways to continue to dance and perform as a company. This three part project entitled “Solace,” consisted of the main site specific performance, production of a documentary about the process, and a screen dance. This dance on film portion of the project focuses primarily on transcribing the performers' emotional and sensorial experiences that took place during this somatic healing project leading up to the outdoor performance. This film begs the audience to ask themselves, that by moving away from our COVID-19 imposed isolation, and returning to nature, can we attempt to find ‘solace’ in our healing process?

[ TRACY HALLORAN - Artistic Director and Choreographer ]
Artistic director, Tracy Halloran, earned her BFA in dance at Marygrove College and her MFA in Choreography at the University of Michigan. In 2014, she was named the Kresge Fellow in Music and Dance. She has worked as a performer, teacher, choreographer, and rehearsal director in the dance world. She is currently an Assistant Professor of Dance at Madonna University. She is also the co-founder of Detroit Dance Exchange, a program established to help local choreographers exhibit and explore their own professional works. Halloran’s choreography blurs the lines between dance genres and styles by combining the movement techniques of modern, hip hop, jazz and contemporary. She uses the dynamics of motion and choreographic levels to create explosive and exciting movement phrases, which juxtapose the delicacy of human emotion. This year, Halloran was a finalist in the Michigan Dance Council’s prestigious Maggie Allesee Choreography competition.
[ GREATER ALEXANDER - Original Music ]
Alexander Vlachos started using the moniker Greater Alexander as a way of creatively expressing the greater part of himself through the medium of a sonic musical landscape.
Greater Alexander was born in New York, raised in Greece and is currently residing in Greater Detroit, Michigan. As a resident of Assemble Sound, he uses natural reverb to record in spaces around Detroit while infusing classical and acoustic guitars, piano, African and Latin percussion instruments to color the music and create an Indie-world folk genre similar to Jack Johnson intertwined with José González, Trevor Hall, Mike Love, Nick Drake, Jason Mraz and Paul Simon. Greater Alexander’s vocal tonality and falsetto was found through insight received by the recordings of Justin Vernon of Bon Iver and Thom Yorke of Radiohead. Each song travels to far distances yet steadily walks a steady narrow road. The path to achieving a dream can be a long, arduous journey. On it, you see remnants of those that have traveled before you. You see lost hope and altered courses. Indie-folk artist, Greater Alexander, has seen all of that and more. Love is his fuel and spreading it is his goal. - Gary Bartle
