Director Biography - Jane F Kennington

My name is Jane Kennington and I love to make worlds. From films to graphic design, 3D animation, editing, VFX and videogames I've dipped my toes in almost everything. I love making weird and cool stories and I'm always pushing my own creative and technical boundaries!

I'm currently attending John Curtin College of the Arts where I hone my skills in the Media Arts GAT program. This is where I produce my passion project 'Stanciverse' films which have now won three awards at film festivals over the years.

I am currently employed a number of tech startups as a digital designer, which means I write, animate and edit an advertisement every week to go up on the company's social media.

I am also directing the arena shooter FPS Incolatus which has showed at the Perth Games Festival and XR:WA.

I've always wanted to make a fairy tale...
Historically, fairy tales have been used as a way of reaching young audiences and instilling values within them while staying engaging.

The Sogs Sisters and the Legend of the Clab is an allegorical fairy tale about the dangers of factional conflict within groups. The film follows the Sogs Sisters, Norma and Stevie, as they brave the Middle Dimension; a place between places set to an epic fantasy backdrop inspired by a mix between Peter Jackson’s fantasy worldbuilding in Lord of the Rings trilogy (2001-3) and the saturated, grand hilly sunsets in Jaden Smith’s SYRE videos.

The plot is a simple narrative in a complex fantasy world inspired by the sci-fi fantasy paintings of Dorje Bellbrook in their work on Destiny (2014). A principal inspiration for the diegesis of the film is the 1865 novel Alice in Wonderland (Lewis Carroll). Like Alice in the book, a highly bizarre and confusing world is presented to the Sogs Sisters, yet they accept this with a cartoonish naivete, asking few questions. This narrative device opens the door to fantastical visuals and worlds which appeal to a younger generation without the requirement of overly expository dialogue.

The film attempts to reach LGBT youth with a moral of unity and vigilance while encouraging empathy towards more marginalised members of the community.
