Award-winning and multi-nominated composer MICHEL CORRIVEAU has created scores for several feature films and international television series. Drawing on textures and an intimate knowledge of electro acoustics, his eclectic blend of traditional elements and use of leading edge technology has underlined independent dramas as well as box-office feature films ; ANNA (LAIFFA 2016 winner for best score, BIFF 2015 official selection, nominated at ACCT and Quebec Cinema awards for best score), starring Anna Mouglalis, Barrymore (starring Christopher Plummer), Answered by Fire (best score nominee for Gemini), starring David Wenham (Lord of the Rings) and directed by Jessica Hobbs (Emmy Award for The Crown), A Breath Away, starring Olga Kurylenko (Black Widow), Romain Duris (L’Auberge Espagnole), and Canadian all-time Box-office Hit Bon Cop Bad Cop (starring Colm Feore), best score nominee at the Quebec Cinema awards. Corriveau composed for major TV series productions such as the Canal+ global success Versailles (Amazon Prime), the Irish production Hidden Assets, starring Simone Kirby (Peaky Blinders) and Angelina Ball (The Commitments), and Quebec hit True North (winner of 3 Gémeaux awards for best score). Corriveau composed for significant US and European TV-networks including BBC, Lifetime, SYFY, Discovery, Disney, and France 2. Over the course of his career, he has accumulated more than 11 wins and 23 nominations, notably the 2007 and 2017 SOCAN Composer of the year.
Corriveau comes from a musical family. A violinist and conductor, his grandfather Philippe Filion, along with Michel’s grandmother, provided piano and violin accompaniment for silent films in the 1920s. His mother Monique also being a piano teacher, it was only fitting that he undertook piano studies. He started to compose small pieces when he was eleven and would later acquire a Master’s degree from Boston’s Berklee College.
In the 1980s, working as a young synthesizer aficionado, he meets and assists world-renowned player Jean Roussel (Cat Stevens, The Police, Bob Marley). The multi-instrumentalist producer then serves as a stage and studio musician for many high-profile groups and artists (Céline Dion, Corey Hart, Luba), recording in mythical studios such as Power Station NYC, Atlantic Studios and Compass Point Studios. After taking part in the advertising world in the 1990s, composing music for national ad campaigns such as Coca Cola, McDonalds, Volkswagen, GM and Danone, he turns his full attention to the big screen. In 2018, he opens a second production studio with his son Jérémie, also a composer, continuing the family tradition of bringing music to moving pictures that began three generations before.
Raised within the french touch as well as the american way, for Michel Corriveau, composing music for the screen is all about sensitivity: “The first step in the creative process is to listen to what’s being said and get behind the image to understand the filmmaker’s intention.”
