Smoking Place Photo Expedition V
Brief documentary about the fifth of five photo expeditions to a sacred Indian site visited by the Lewis and Clark expedition in a remote and rugged part of the Rocky Mountains.
This is the third of three short videos in my quest to obtain the best photo possible of a historical location known as the "Smoking Place." The site was visited by the Lewis and Clark expedition on June 27, 1806, traveling on six to eight feet of snow in a rough and isolated portion of today's central Idaho.
My goal was to capture an image for a book that duplicated conditions they experienced on that day in 1806. Global warming has changed the calculus under which these conditions may be encountered, which added to the challenge. Access to this site is difficult and hazardous at this time of year, especially alone.

Jeffrey P. Havens is a former Midwest resident who now lives and works in Montana. In an effort to produce a novel and photobook on the Lewis and Clark expedition, he has hiked, canoed, visited and photographed much of the Lewis and Clark trail.
This video is the culmination of a great effort to retell the Lewis and Clark story in a differing manner using a novel, photobook and videos all made by one person.
Work began on this difficult project in the late afternoon of August 10, 2010. This was exactly six months after a financially and spiritually devastating period of unemployment and illegal home foreclosure in the fallout of the Great Recession, which led me west in search of work. Fortunately, this period also afforded me the opportunity to re-discover Lewis and Clark, after having interest in the topic for many years.
