Jonas has worked with animation at many productions around the world, such as “The Hobbit: The Desolation of Smaug”, “Dawn of Planet of the Apes”, “Happy Feet 2”, “The Great Wall”. In 2018 he completed his first film as director with the short animation The Robot & The Whale.
I have always loved tales. Smile is to me a classical tale with a modern style. What got me hooked to this idea was the looking forward to fun work with facial expressions and pantomime. There is something very appealing with the shape of the happy/sad mouth. It’s a contrast that everyone understands and relate to. But mainly the film is about friendship and how it can make you feel good.
The world in Smile is colourful and a bit lop-sided. I wanted to mix soft and hard shapes to get a mix of the graphic and the rounder and happier that kids like.
