Director Biography - Anson Jew

Anson Jew grew up with a fascination with film and storytelling. He spent a lot of his youth making special effects and stop-motion movies on Super-8 film and drawing his own comic book stories. This eventually led to his working as an animator at LucasArts Games and eventually becoming a storyboard artist in film, television and games. Some of his credits include Christopher Robin, Wonder Woman, Scooby-Doo: Mystery Inc., TMNT, Full Throttle and Curse of Monkey Island. After decades of working to help others realize their stories for the screen, he has decided to jump back into the realm of creating his own visions for the screen.

Director Statement

"Small Town" arose from my lifelong interest in special effects. I've always been fascinated by special effects, especially those involving old school in-camera effects like forced perspective. "Small Town" was shot very loosely and freely with regard to story, but I spent a lot of time pre-planning a set of rules for me to shoot within to maintain the illusion of The Giant's height during a shoot. Less than a third of the shots involved using any compositing effects; the rest is all in-camera, with the "giant" illusion maintained by closely monitoring angles and camera height. As far as the story was concerned, I just let my imagination roam free as far as what kind of trouble I would put The Giant in, and like The Giant, I would just playfully try to amuse myself with whatever the environment offered me.
