Kevin started writing in elementary school and grew a passion for filmmaking in high school. He is currently in his senior year at UC Santa Cruz pursuing a double major degree for Film and Business. He has started to transition his work from narrative storytelling to more documentary based work for the past couple of years. His work often exposes to the viewer the underlying effects of borderline obsession for some individuals and their passions in life.
I started making Small Pieces as an observational documentary. As time went on and I started to get more accustomed to the artist and the space she shares with other artists to work in, it became clearer and clearer what type of film I needed to make in order to truly show the mindset and atmosphere of the studio life itself. The film and film shoot days gradually shifted focus from observational to a more poetic reading of the process and the studio itself. Working with the subject, Alicia Persaud, it became a project more about the abstract state of mind she was in for the majority of the shoots more than she herself. It became a project that not only had me digging into her mind and work, but also into the mind of a student, or individual, completely engrossed and focused into the work they love to do.
