Slovene Ethnographic museum – 100 years!

A museum about people, for people ...
... with a longstanding tradition: in 2023 celebrating 100 years!

The Slovene Ethnographic Museum (SEM) is a national ethnographic museum that houses some of the most notable Slovene collections offering insights into traditional and contemporary Slovene life and non-European collections. It is a modern and inclusive museum embedded in the local and global environments. Its wide variety of activities that communicate European and non-European heritage include exhibitions, cultural events, workshops for children, storytelling events and guided tours.

The SEM is always lively and welcoming: interesting permanent and temporary exhibitions for all ages, craftsmen in their open ateliers are designing and making ceramics and woven textile products, and children are learning traditional crafts in “Little Craftsmen” atelier. The SEM café with its green setting is one of the most inviting in town. And book lovers will find soul food in the museum library that is open to the public. In the museum shop, more than 40 Slovene craftsmen are represented through products that can be yours forever.

The SEM operates in two buildings of the former Austro-Hungarian barracks on the Metelkova Museum Platform in Ljubljana, where together with three other national museums it forms a new urban cultural centre of the capital Ljubljana.
