Emma Nebeker was born and raised in Austin, Texas where she grew up eating barbecue breakfast tacos, square dancing, and dancing with 4 foot long mums at homecoming. She suffers from middle child syndrome and left handism (aka being a south paw). Emma is an ArtCenter College of Design and Warner Bros. Discovery Intern Alumni, where she has worked on award-winning series such as Batwheels, Harley Quinn, and Velma. Emma specializes in storyboarding and production for TV animation, and she is currently an Assistant Production Manager on DC Super Powers.
Slice of Life was born in the homework margins of a DND class. Technically it was called Dynamic Story and Concept, but everyone knew it as the class where you’d get college credit just to design your Dungeons & Dragons character. Not feeling drawn to any traditional DND class, Emma Nebeker had spent her 14 week course developing a bok choy character—really just a last minute record of her most recent outdoor garden clippings. It wasn’t long before her classmates started to realize the flavor potential of her character: doodles of said bok choy were drawn, chopped up, skewered, boiled in Chinese hot pot, smashed, and killed in other unfortunate but delicious instances.
Initially pissed off by the disrespect to her character, Emma had soon realized the humor and charm in torturing a humanoid vegetable. Storyboards, more animatable character designs, and compositing tests were made, and an unnamed bok choy soon became the lovable Parker Choi we know today.
Later on, in a Thesis Short Film course, Emma Chai had reached out to Nebeker to pursue co-directorship in making Slice of Life happen. One Discord and Google Drive server, 15 group chats, 2 visual development and animation courses, 4 recording sessions, and several hundred text and email exchanges with each individual team member later, and our 2D character animated and photo background multimedia masterpiece was completed.
