Sarah Lois Dorai is an award winning Malaysian filmmaker whose Kelabit heritage has greatly influenced her choice of work to amplify women’s voices as well as indigenous narratives across different creative mediums.
She made her long form debut when she joined a line-up of female writers & directors for Malaysian movie “Sabalik Baju” that debuted on Netflix in October 2021 that quickly became the No.1 Top Movie in Malaysia within its first two weeks of release.
Sarah's work often circle the themes of family, heritage, culture and identity, which are themes very close to her heart. She hopes to inspire others to leave tangible legacies through art for future generations.
I believe that women led stories don’t always have to be shocking, outrageous or have its female characters display great strength, despite them all being traits that women undoubtedly possess. I believe that it can also exist in the simplest form of the nuanced female experience of everyday life—and in this case, the all too familiar dynamic of sisterhood.
Sisters Before Misters is a lighthearted ode to the unbreakable bond between sisters that trump clashing personalities, personal shortcomings, and questionable life choices. It sets out to capture a moment in time of the lives of sisters Lily and Claire at an intersection of life where they experience loss, scraping the surface of what it means to love, grieve and to ultimately show up for one another.
