Hao Ren is a director and writer from China. He specializes in presenting the emotions he wants to express in his films, bringing the audience multi-layered emotional experiences and thought-provoking ideas through drama, not only in terms of entertainment and relaxation, but also in terms of their profound impact on the emotional, intellectual and socio-cognitive levels.
The story of Sisters was born out of my own experiences and inspired by some classic films. I have always been fascinated by family relationships, hidden emotional tensions, and the conflicts that lurk within kinship, and with this film I wanted to explore the subtle yet complex relationships between loved ones. The story was inspired in part by my reflections on the distribution of roles and prejudices in families: in a relationship where we all aspire to support each other, there is often an unspeakable sense of competition and alienation. Such feelings invisibly intertwine between family members, influencing each other's choices and behaviors.
In creating Sisters, I also drew on films such as the psychological games played in Eve and What Lies Beneath, as well as The Joker's portrayal of its characters' inner pain. These films made me realize that the narrative technique of thriller atmosphere and psychological suspense can more realistically show the characters' inner hurt and conflict and convey a strong and deep emotional tension. In the confrontation between Elaine and Annika, I tried to create a sense of breathtaking tension so that the audience would not just be bystanders but would be able to feel the emotional conflict between the two as if they were there.
Sisters is not just a story about revenge, but an in-depth exploration of family ties, bonds and the individual heart. Through this film, I hope to provoke the audience to think about the unspoken emotions in a family - emotions that are hidden, ignored but always present.
