Master Sirso

The documentary “Mestre Sirso: when the world is silence the vibration is a master” portrays a history of a black deaf man, and his continuous fight for the rights historically denied. Through the sound vibration Sirso meets the Capoeira’s roda, developed the speech, and discovered a talent to make and play the instruments of Capoeira. In Capoeira’s ginga became a Master, made Physical Education College, and specializes. But the biggest dream has not come true. Sirso who’s work as general services in a ONG wants to become a physical education teacher, and allow another children to have the same oportunity to change their life that he had in Capoeira.

In 1974 an meningitis epidemic hits Brazil and Sirso is one of the disease victims. He loses his hearing at 4 years old and grows at suburb of Cascavel, Paraná, Brazil’s south. The black and poor boy takes more than 10 years to adjust himself to the deafness. The berimbau stops the silence: Sirso feels the sound vibration, join the Capoeira Roda, and the life earned a new sense. Learned how to make and play the musical instruments, developed the speech training with the Capoeira musics and become a Master. He dedicated to study and graduated in Physical Education college, but be a teacher still is a dream to come true. The life’s fight is for space and social inclusion, and for the deaf’s rights.

Director Biography - Emanuela Palma

Journalist, photographer, and audiovisual student. Post-graduation in Photography and image, in Faculdade Cândido Mendes. Finished the edition course by the International Cinema Academy, in Rio de Janeiro, and attended the Script course, in the Darcy Ribeiro Academy. Between 2013 and 2018 was production coordinator of Cinema And Human Rights Show, in Porto Velho, Rondônia. She has directed and produced the documentary “Interoceânica - da Amazônia ao pacífico”, the short film “Raízes e Rainhas”, and currently the movie “Mestre Sirso - when the world is silence the vibration is a Master”.

Jornalista, fotógrafa e estudante de audiovisual, com pós-graduação em Fotografia e Imagem, na Faculdade Cândido Mendes. Concluiu o curso de Edição, pela Academia Internacional de Cinema, no Rio de Janeiro, e frequentou o curso de Roteiro, na Escola Darcy Ribeiro. Entre os anos de 2013 e 2018 foi coordenadora de produção da Mostra Cinema e Direitos Humanos, em Porto Velho, Rondônia. Dirigiu e produziu o documentário: Interoceânica - da Amazônia ao Pacífico, o curta: Raízes e Rainhas, e atualmente está produzindo e dirigindo o documentário Mestre Sirso - quando o mundo é silêncio a vibração é Mestre.

Director Statement

Palma Imagem: produtora com atuação em projetos audiovisuais, com foco em cultura e direitos humanos, é responsável pela coordenação da Mostra Cinema e Direitos Humanos, em Porto Velho, Rondônia, onde também produziu o documentário Da Amazônia ao Pacífico – Rodovia Interoceânica. No Rio de Janeiro produziu o curta-metragem Raízes e Rainhas, realizado no Jongo da Serrinha, e em Cascavel, no Paraná, descobriu a história de Mestre Sirso, que será retratada em um documentário.
