Alina Popescu (born in 1991 in Bucharest, Romania) graduated with honors from Rhode Island School of Design in 2013. She went on to design motion graphics and animation for title sequences at Prologue Pictures, for projects including American Horror Story and Godzilla.
After returning to Romania, Alina continued her career in graphic design and animation and has been awarded the Graphis Gold Award and three German Design Awards.
In 2018 she was commisioned by Hermit and the Recluse to direct and animate the music video for their new album “Orpheus vs the Sirens”. The animation - “Sirens” - visualizes Ka’s lyrics and translates the Greek myths into modern times.
“Sirens” is the opening song of the album “Orpheus vs the Sirens” released by Hermit and the Recluse. The concept of the album reflects Ka’s real life struggles by framing street survival as a hero’s journey– a lifelong quest for honor and nobility marked by obstacles and compromises.
The animated music video draws on the mythology alluded to in the lyrics but takes liberties with its interpretation by creating a melange of ancient and modern. Stylistic choices were made in order to touch upon the tragic events that have marked the black community in the past years, while other elements were added in the hope that they will shine a beacon of light over the fate of our Orpheus. One such element is the dandelion, the “lion’s tooth”, which symbolizes surviving through challenges and difficulties, as well as healing from emotional and physical pain.
A combination of traditional animation and computer graphics were used in order to create the oniric atmosphere of the music video.
