Director Statement

In exploring Timor-Leste for 'Sikat Subar', the rooster's profound symbolism within the nation's culture and history became a central theme. This documentary delves beyond the surface of cockfighting, revealing it as part of a complex social fabric that encompasses ethics, tradition, and the survival needs of its people.

While not endorsing cockfighting, 'Sikat Subar' seeks to understand its role in Timor-Leste’s society, balancing the tradition with concerns for animal welfare and the social-economic aspects it supports. This exploration serves as a broader examination of how traditions intersect with modern ethical considerations and human needs.

'Sikat Subar' is more than an examination of a controversial tradition; it's a sensory journey through Timor-Leste's vibrant culture and challenging history. The documentary shines a light on a nation shaped by centuries of colonization and its struggle for independence, revealing the resilience and spirit of its people.

Through the lens of the ubiquitous rooster, 'Sikat Subar' offers a unique social portrait of Timor-Leste, inviting viewers to reflect on the intricate tapestry of life, tradition, and identity in one of the world's youngest nations. My hope is for the film to spark discussions on the complexities of tradition and ethics, providing insights into the Timorese people’s struggles and resilience.
