Cassie De Colling is an award-winning director whose career spans more than a decade. Her last documentary, Precious Leader Woman, took the 2021 Banff Mountain Film Festivals People's Choice Award. In all of her work, De Colling uses filmmaking to capture honest moments. She unpacks and celebrates the human condition through relatable struggles and perspectives. In Shut Out, Cassie tackles another female sports person narrative - where she works with Olympic gold winning goalkeeper, Stephanie Labbé, to weave a personal story aimed at the next generation of young female athletes.
As a teenage girl in Australia, I was addicted to soccer. I played, I watched, I went to any stadium game I could. Soccer was everything to me. So when Wallop Film approached me to direct Shut Out, I was struck with the same giddy feeling I would get when I would tie up my cleats - and that's what excites me about making this film.
I've poured my creativity into discovering how to tell the story of a national hero who struggles to balance reaching the top of the world with finding her true self.
There is a big difference between what the public sees on TV, and the reality of Steph's life - the more I connect with her, the more I understand how complex her journey to the top has been.
The relevance of Stephanie's story will capture a pivotal moment in women's soccer while serving as a conversation starter for mental health for athletes in our society. We will craft a film that can touch the masses but, most of all, capture the imaginations of the teenage girls who, like me, needed a line of sight to chase our dreams and become our own heroes.
