Noah Himmelstein, is an established theatre director turned first time filmmaker. His work has been seen on stages in New York, regionally around the US and in Europe. He often works as a teaching artist and mentor to students exploring the arts. Noah's film directing debut was inspired by personal experiences and concerns with his partner. These buried ghosts, like so many of ours, resurfaced during the lockdown of this past year and have given inspiration to their film making its world premiere in 2022. He lives in New York with his partner Noah Zachary and two dogs, Paisley and Willa. noahhimmelstein.com
I collaborated on my first film with my partner, Noah Zachary. In it, we explore 24 hours in the life of a queer man as he navigates the food triggers around Binge Eating Disorder within in his relationship, New York City and his own psyche. To create an inner space that enlivens for us the world 'as he is,' we chose for this to be a silent piece with a score I commissioned by composer Pornchanok Kanchanabanca that gives us a romantic experience of a potentially dark subject. The experience of time in the film is of one trapped on a hamster wheel of his own making. How people create time is of primary interest to me in my theatre work and it was exhilarating to articulate these questions on film. This couple is loosely based on us and our experiences navigating this issue together with difficulty, patience and love. Creating this film together was a deeply personal and revelatory experience not only in collaborating in a creative capacity but in beginning to name this disorder and work through it together. - Noah Himmelstein
