Top Screens Victoria Finalist
Sequoia Pather is an Australian filmmaker. Her first short film ‘Shift’ made for VCE Media was selected as a finalist for Victoria’s Top Screens 2023. Sequoia is currently studying Professional Writing and Editing at RMIT, while continuing to explore ways to interconnect her interests of film, writing, photography and performance.
The idea for ‘Shift’ began during Christmas when I slept in our station wagon in my grandparents yard. This reminded me of traveling around Australia in a van with my parents and our dog as an 11-year-old. This inspired the story of Marlee, a young girl who lives in her car unwillingly with her elderly dog. The film combines my love of cinematography and music to create an emotional and visually captivating story. 'Shift' pushed me to try new things in filmmaking, including editing, producing, and screenwriting. It also allowed me to further my skills in directing and acting by taking on both roles simultaneously.
