When I set out to write and direct this film, my goal was, first and foremost, raw authenticity. I wanted to depict the trials and tribulations of marriage - and the joys and breakthroughs - in a way that would resonate with married couples. I've known many married people over the years, and I've been married for more than two decades, and often we don't realize that so many couples experience the same types of fights and frustrations that others do. We deal with marital strife as though every problem we face is unique when in fact so many have dealt with the same issues.
And so many couples end their marriages because of these difficulties without seeing where they need to mature or where each individual is culpable in some way for the breakdown of the relationship.
So I wanted to make a movie that was the story of one marriage but was also an authentic look at what most marriages face - the moments, big and small, that bind a couple together or drive them apart.
