Director Biography - Nader Davoodi

Nader Davoodi last made a film in 2010. His film “Red, White, and the Green” was selected by the Berlinale Film Festival and picked up a Human Rights Award nomination. In the following years he had to stop making movies due to government pressures, interrogations, and multiple bans on him travelling abroad, which ultimately led to him agreeing not to show his films and stop his film screenings and activities.

For the first time in 10 years, he is releasing his new film, which is the result of a new film-making approach influenced by his experience in photography, art, and journalism.

An award-winning photojournalist, for the past two decades, Nader has been working to produce ethnographically detailed works that document a very important period in contemporary Iranian history.

His previous documentaries, 13 and a Half, premiered at the 25th Vancouver International Film Festival, followed by Aref Squared at Dubai International Film Festival.

Director Statement

Selfie is an honest, vulnerable exploration of the singular thread that binds all life with one another: suffering.

So often we mistakenly accept that a life well lived implies a life of uninterrupted happiness. That suffering is something we only experience if we are doing life “wrong.” The truth, often more readily accepted in the Eastern wisdom and tradition, is that suffering is an unavoidable and often necessary part of life. That it is, indeed, the one thing we are all guaranteed to have in common with all life on earth, irrespective of whatever else may separate us.

"Selfie” consists of 10 short episodes. Set in Iran and exploring individual stories of vulnerability, strength, love, loss, heartache, injustice, recovery, and triumph, each chapter of the film tenderly explores the ways we fight for survival, and the necessity of creating meaning in life.

“The secrets of the beloved, are better told by others”. Rumi
