Secrets of the Dead: Mozart's Sister
Maria Anna Mozart was, like her younger brother Wolfgang, a child prodigy. The children toured most of
Europe together, with the older sister often given top billing. But that all changed when she turned 18.
Once she reached adulthood, performing in public risked her reputation and was deemed
‘inappropriate.’ Nannerl (as she was affectionately known) was left behind in Salzburg while her brother
became a star. But she continued to write music and sent at least one composition to Wolfgang who
praised it as “beautiful” and encouraged her to write more. What happened to her music?
The film will reveal and test controversial new evidence from music experts and forensic handwriting
analysts that suggests some of Wolfgang’s earliest music may have in fact been written with his sister. A
dramatic musical investigation unfolds around the world - as we also turn our gaze to the unrecognized
female creators of our time.
