Scarred
Scarred is an experimental short about medical trauma. Surgery isn't just a miracle-- it's also torture. Do we dare to stare back at the horror of the medical gaze? Or do we keep blaming the disabled body as the eternal freak? The violence is deep, yet the record is so easy to hide. The patient must be deeply grateful to be torn apart with such expertise.

*writer's statement: Julianna Romanyk
A love letter to sound-focused horror films, and the trauma of how doctors often frame disability. Inspired by a lifetime of surgeries-- especially the one with the biggest incision. The scars are subtle now, but the trauma is so much more severe than these lines let on.
This piece was created as a soundscape first. Long before we picked up a camera, I recorded my narration and fully scored it with all the sound effects and music.
We shot the film like a music video with three major setups: the pill halo, the scar closeups, and the disembodied gloved hands. I then edited the shots to fit with the score-- only a few mixing changes were made to the original audio during the final edit.
