Scarlet Veils
Scarlet Veils portrays the harsh realities faced by young girls in northern Nigeria who have become victims of circumstances due to grooming, rape and HIV. Their voices have been silenced, and their trauma overshadowed by societal stigma–stigma related to premarital sex, out-of-wedlock pregnancies, and living with sexual diseases like HIV. The veils they wear are no longer just coverings, but scarlet, stained with the "blood" of their tears, symbolizing the loss of their innocence. This is not just a story; it is their reality as they live and share it.

Gábor Henry Raschberger studies anthropology at the University of Hamburg. Influenced by his intercultural background, he is particularly interested in the levels on which people associate with each other on a universally human basis. As a filmmaker, he likes to approach his research topics, such as politics and work practices, on an experimental-visual level.
This film is the result of a collaboration. While the footage and interviews have been created in rural northern Nigeria, Dr. Umma Aliyu Musa and me have been discussing and setting everything into a narrative in Germany.
