Director Statement

I’ve always loved the genre of Sci-fi. My top three favorite films are Back to the Future, The Empire Strikes Back, and Eternal Sunshine of the Spotless Mind.

So when David Hahnert came to me with his idea for Saving Cycle, I jumped at it. Alternate dimensions, a hero complex, and humorous exploits, all rooted around a genuine desire to save the one you love? Count me in.

Crafting the story was so much fun, as we weaved in interesting, unique, and even silly ways to save someone. The stakes are raised from there in the most surprising yet still satisfying way.

This script was an absolute blast to film. Our lead actors, Colton Carlson and Eleni Kash, quite literally were their characters, and their on-screen chemistry is undeniable. They came in with such playful energy, and moments of improvised genius shined through. Colton’s versatility as an actor especially jumped out, as he literally had to act alongside himself. Plus, David and his remarkable ability to create Sci-fi elements for our SaveCave and Simulator — including really impressive props! — brought the world completely alive.

The editing stage was absolute joy, working with montages, split screens, Sim hubs and excellent music, featuring the indie rock band Teen Girl Scientist Monthly’s adventurous, heartfelt “It’s On” for our signature Save sequence. Watching the film over and over, it stayed fresh and enjoyable, and I loved it even more. Is it possible to laugh at the same moment 100 times over? Believe me, it is.

I’ve made many films throughout my career, but nothing has ever been like Saving Cycle. It is truly a special film. Enjoy.
