Save Us by J. Pyles

You hesitate to publicly stand up for George Floyd and other Black victims of senseless injustice but who, exactly, are you afraid you might offend? Because anyone who does not recognize the indefensible immorality, the primitive disregard and the vile hatred we all saw in that video may not be worth your silence, or your soul.

What more do we have to endure? What depraved violation of our humanity will be THE "right" one before society at large says enough is enough? For the record, we crossed that threshold generations ago. Yet, for some reason, the "line" (as seen through the eyes of anyone without a conscience or soul or respect for human life) keeps getting moved forward. If you've never watched a black man you love cry because he is so tired of seeing black men victimized, targeted, abused, profiled, disrespected, dismissed, judged, and murdered, don't tell us what to feel.

He began his endeavor into cinematography in 2010 by shooting blogs, live concerts, and music videos. His creative vision in the shooting of music videos is what caught the attention of the city. Mikell or “Mick” began shooting straight to DVD comedy concerts at the Houston Improv around in 2013. Numerous famous and up and coming comedians trusted Mick to capture the essence of their stand-up at live shows in his 4 to 5 camera shoots. DeRay Davis, Brandon T. Jackson, Cocoa Brown, and Ken Boyd are among the national acts that iRise produced. Mick’s eye for detail and professional approach fostered an alliance with another accomplished comedian and filmmaker, Billy D. Washington.

Through their collaborative efforts, they produced 2 award-winning shot films, “Bro” which won for best foreign short film at the African Oscars, and “The Pillowcase” which won for best short film at the Houston Black Film Festival. It was also a finalist in the Gentleman Jack national short film competition. On these films, Mick served as Director of Photographer, Producer, Executive Producer, and editor.
