Hysterical Hearts Collective is a female-founded storytelling collective based in Toronto, Ontario. We believe that storytelling is an inherently collaborative process. We cultivate and prioritize equal creative input in our work, from development through to the final cut. In doing so, we aim to dismantle the traditional hierarchy of filmmaking that positions and celebrates the singular vision of the one director. Our process questions the patriarchal foundation of a film industry that has led to the systemic objectification, commodification, and erasure of women, women's bodies, and women's stories. It is through these questions and acts of community and collaboration that we can begin to unravel our own internalized misogyny. We strive to make space for women in film through the stories we tell and the way in which we tell them.
The collective was founded in 2018 by Melissa Paulson, Sarah Slywchuk, Nora Smith, and Jaclyn Vogl. Our first short film Savage Breakup premiered at the St. John's International Women's Film Festival in 2020, and went on to screen at the Pendance Film Festival, Nevada Women's Film Fest, and Toas Shortz Festival.
