Santa Barbar & Ventura Colleges of Law Conducts Field Study in Cuba: A Cultural & Environmental Phenomenon Out of Necessity
Cuba Up-Close! This exclusive short docu-film is an incredible experience from the eclectic Cuban rhythms of the Buena Vista Social Club, to the sustainable farms of Finca Marta, and the classic cars that roam the streets carrying tourists around the art-packed city. Dr. Teri Jory, with the Colleges of Law Team, ventured into the vibrant city of Havana, Cuba and beyond to do field study work involving an Environmental Law comparison between the United States and Cuba. Believe it or not, Cuba is a leading environmental model in the world – out of necessity. Due to the years-long trade embargo imposed by the US, preventing U.S. businesses from conducting trade with Cuban interests, Cuba has been forced to adapt to survive.

I am a filmmaker of community. I believe every person and culture has a story to tell. I own a production company, Poise Productions, and currently direct and produce short documentaries for The Resource – Santa Barbara’s community focused media nonprofit – a livestream and television show that builds community by shining a light on community issues providing neighbors around the world with the resources and education to help navigate through life (www.TheResourceSB.com). I earned my BA in Political Science and Media Communication (UNLV); my PhD in Public Policy, Statistics, and Political Psychology at the University of California, Santa Barbara; and my JD at the Santa Barbara Colleges of Law where I am the Academic Advisor. As a 4th degree black belt, I created and teach Personal Safety workshops empowering survivors around the world.
On my law school’s recent field study trip to Cuba (via the U.S. State Department), I was not allowed to bring my camera equipment but could bring my phone. I knew it would be an interesting journey but had no idea how fascinating. I filmed on my phone (which actually worked out great) and am excited to share this short docu-film of "Cuba Up-Close – A Cultural Phenomenon and Environmental Model Out Of Necessity". Cuba is truly a hidden gem that most people will never have the pleasure to visit or even learn about. Cuba is about "hope" where its people and culture focus on community with eclectic music, art, and sustainable farming. Enjoy the journey of Cuba through my short docu-film! (TRT-9:59 but I also have a longer version - 29 minutes).
