My "moving poems" are fragments of video, everyday life, collected over time.
One of my mentors for making “moving poems” has been Jonas Mekas. Like Mekas, I enjoy stringing frames together without a traditional narrative in place.
Sandra Dyas is a visual artist and published author living in Iowa City. She received her MFA in Intermedia: Performance Art and Video from the University of Iowa in 1998. She recently retired from Cornell College, where she taught photography, video and performance art. Her artwork has been exhibited internationally.
A small collection of her videos were screened at the Iowa City Refocus Film Festival this fall. In a review of the festival by Marya E. Gates @ Roger Ebert.com, Marya writes "Before each of the festival’s 30+ films and events, there are live performances by local musicians, slideshows of local artwork, and even short experimental films. Among my favorite acts that I saw were the experimental videos of Sandra Dyas..."
Sandra has been collaborating with filmmaker LeAnn Erickson on Homegrown Stories since its inception in 2013. The online media project is dedicated to the aesthetics of still photography as it applies to the moving image as well as an intellectual interest in questions of personal space, the act of storytelling and the primacy of place in shaping one’s world view.
