San Gabriel Valley

Uniquely Asian American

San Gabriel Valley is a silly & light-hearted satirical comedy featuring an all Asian-American cast and produced entirely by people of color.

The climax of every scene is an actual climax! The people are free, open and beautiful. Join Sydney, Jamaica, Orlando, Dean, Virginia and the Delivery Guy in San Gabriel Valley. A world where sex is peace and no more problems exist for you and me.

Director Biography - Eric Lin Hsu

San Gabriel Valley is a story I have been wanting to tell for a very long time. When I was young, my family was one of very few Asians living in South Dakota. From the small town of Aberdeen, we would travel 6 hours every few weeks to Minneapolis so we could stock up on ethnic foods. South Dakota made it hard to fit in. Television shows made it harder for me to relate. Despite watching American sitcoms in 80’s & 90’s I rarely saw Asians on these shows, let alone star in one.

When I was 9, my Dad bought me a VHS video camera & I started using this camcorder to produce local public access shows. With my friends we would produce content for my high school, videotaping community stories & airing these field pieces for the student body. This experience led me to eventual work on music videos. I found myself entrenched in a hop hop industry that catered to a roster of talented artists, none of whom resembled me or my family. I continued to be disappointed by the lack of Asian Americans in major shows. Where were all the Asians?

In near-four decades of living, I have seen just a handful of shows that feature primary Asian actors. I hungered to see their presence in common everyday experiences that serve as the backdrop for narratives. Now, I have moved from distant critic to active participant. I am the creator of a web series about Asian Americans learning to accept their sensual natures and grow carefree in the community of San Gabriel Valley. SGV depicts individuals that I was waiting to arrive in my adolescence. Instead, I hope to provide the example to current youth who may be involved in the same search.

SGV was produced by a diverse crew including a Latino cinematographer, youth students from East LA & Boyle Heights & myself, a gay Asian male Director. Together we are learning to tell the story of this ethnic cast of characters & enlighten any stigma surrounding Asian culture. I am a proud Asian American and I am thrilled to share this story with you.
