Bruce Kimmel wrote, directed and starred in the cult movie hit, The First Nudie Musical (available on a Special Edition DVD). He also co-created (with David Wechter) the story for the hit film, The Faculty, directed by Robert Rodriguez.
As an actor, Mr. Kimmel guest-starred on most of the long-running television shows of the 1970s, including The Partridge Family (recurring), Happy Days, Laverne and Shirley, MASH, Alice, and many others, including leading roles in several pilots for all three of the major networks. His second film, The Creature Wasn't Nice, starring Cindy Williams, Leslie Nielsen, Patrick Macnee, and Gerrit Graham was horribly recut and mangled by its producers, but has recently had Kimmel's original cut finally released on DVD so people can finally see what the film was meant to be.
Since 1993, Mr. Kimmel has been one of the leading producers of theatre music on CD, having produced over 180 albums. He was nominated for a Grammy for producing the revival cast album of Hello, Dolly! and his album with jazz pianist Fred Hersch, I Never Told You, was also nominated for a Grammy. He has produced solo albums for Petula Clark, Helen Reddy, Jason Graae, Liz Callaway, Christiane Noll, Rebecca Luker, Brent Barrett, Sally Mayes, Judy Kaye, Judy Kuhn, and many others. His label, Kritzerland, has released close to 400 CDs since 2005.
His musical, The Brain From Planet X (written with David Wechter) has been seen in Los Angeles, New York, the United Kingdom, Canada, and is now being performed regionally all over the country. Mr. Kimmel is also the author of twenty two books.
Kimmel’s newest series is “Sami”. Written, Directed and Produced by Kimmel and stars the late Cindy Williams (Broadway “The Drowsy Chaperone”) in her last filmed series. Ms. Williams is a season regular along with Kerry O’Malley (Broadway credits include “Into The Woods”, “On A Clear Day You Can See Forever” “White Christmas” & “Billy Elliot”) & newcomers Sami Staitman and Karim Hazime.
In creating Sami, I wanted a throwback to the sitcoms I loved, where the characters were likeable, the situations were fun, no through-line from episode to episode, and I also wanted music to be integral to the show. As an actor, I was lucky enough to guest star on an awful lot of classic comedy shows in the 1970s and that’s where my heart lies. I also was determined to bring back physical comedy, which I also love. I created the show for Sami Staitman, a young actor I’d been working with since she was twelve. Hearing her tales of auditions and struggles in New York, that seemed like the natural way into the show, kind of a That Girl for now. I knew there’d only be four main characters – her BFF, her mom, and her grandmother. I wrote the latter two roles for the actors who play them – the wonderful Kerry O’Malley as her mom, and the legendary Cindy Williams as her grandma. Cindy, who sadly passed away just three months after we wrapped shooting, has been one of my closest friends since college and she stars in both of my films, and we did a lot of TV together. So, I hope people will enjoy the show, the characters, the comedy, and the songs.
