Same Sex Ecstasy
This animation displays a battle between sexual orientation and the Christian religion. Doubt, contemplations, responses of loved ones: everything fuels the fight between self-acceptance and insecurity. Do they possess the truth when declaring love for the same sex a sinful deed, or do I see something they cannot? If heaven and hell exist, the truth will be too late anyway.

Matteo Bal, born in 1997 in Wageningen, studied at ArtEZ in Arnhem. During the study Fine Art and Design in Education, a fascination for animation arose. After graduating with the Same Sex Ecstasy video, he immediately got a job at de Volkskrant, a national Newspaper in the Netherlands. That together with his own company Studio Balrus, he also makes autonomous films, in which he discusses the uncomfortable parts of life: dementia, death, sexual orientation, etc. Because of the cheerful slant, the borders between autonomous films and music videos are brought down. His films are to be seen in movie theatres as well as in art galleries.
In my animations, I try to grasp the themes that affect me and – as it sometimes seems – grasp all of humanity. I do not provoke, and I do not force, I try to make the viewer considerate of its own opinion. In a world where you are either with us or against us, where there is no middle ground, I try to find no man’s land.
