Director Statement

I AM a Writer, though I haven’t always known it. For years, I pursued various degrees, searching for where I belong, never quite fitting in, but always writing in my spare time. I’ve written proverbs, aphorisms, and inspirational sayings like, “Getting over someone comes effortlessly in TIME. Effortlessly doesn’t mean it's easy; it just means you don't control it.” And, “From an unseen origin, LOVE is implanted; simply because that person is capable of sharing it with another.” Though I received praise from people following my work, it didn’t occur to me that writing was my future.

I considered writing a hobby; not knowing it was art. So, when I started college, I studied everything but writing. Going in circles, searching for my niche. Then one day, while studying animation in Grad school, a writing teacher asked me the question, “Do you believe your TRIBE is animation?” TRIBE. That single word clicked something on in me and made everything clear. I answered assuredly with, “My tribe is writing.” From there, I started down the path of writing.

“A troubled life is a blessing and a curse. Yes, trouble is difficult, but difficulty births wisdom.” Writing is an outlet in which my heart and soul pours; arising from places that deeply affect me. Bursts of inspiration springs forth through hardships I’ve encountered and overcome. Struggles include single motherhood, living as a Black woman in America, and dealing with social anxiety. Out of all the hardships I’ve faced, social anxiety was the most challenging. I went from being outgoing to someone suddenly afraid to leave her home. Life was so unbearable that I cried every day. But I pushed through, graduated college, and earned two BFA’s. As time went on, my anxiety diminished and in the process, I became a deeper person within. This deepness shines through in my work, because my writing is shaped by my experiences.

“Stir up the nations by letting your voice be heard.” I write to let others know they’re not alone in their struggles. I believe people are connected by their shared experiences. In many ways, we’re all the same; linked by similar life events and hardships. But because no one likes to talk about or admit that they have problems, many feel they’re ALONE in their situation. This is why I write; to uplift myself and others.
