Sakaling Malimutan Kita

Upon learning of his estranged father’s unexpected passing, Angelo must come to terms in navigating the tumultuous memories that he last shared with him a few years back. Faced with a tough decision to see him for the last time, he goes on a journey of healing and acceptance as he traces the path back to him. As Angelo goes along his journey, the memories that he kept at the back of his mind makes him question the truthfulness and integrity of how memories can be trusted when the pain has cut too deep to even remember.

Director Statement

“If memories could be canned, would they also have expiry dates? If so, I hope they last for centuries.”

- Chungking Express (Wong Kar-wai, 1994)

Throughout my life, I’ve always wondered if memories could live on in our minds for as long as we wanted to. It’s quite fascinating how we try to fill an empty space with experiences that we hope to bring with us as we go along our journey in life. Time and time again, cinema proved its ability to capture the essence of our existence and through this, I intend to immortalize a fading memory that I wish to keep with me for as long as I can.

Sakaling Malimutan Kita, in many ways, is a journey of acceptance and forgiveness. This is my personal way of dealing with the questions left unanswered and even more so, a way for me to finally be at peace with the fact that there will always be something missing in my life. I know that it’s impossible to go back in time and cherish every moment that I shared with my late father but through the power of cinema, I get to recreate the memories that linger at the back of my mind and also help myself to fulfill the dreams and aspirations that I never had the chance to do with my him.

Oftentimes, memories can betray us from the truth, but at the end of the day, it’s ours to keep. What we take from our experiences is ours and ours alone.
