David F. Mendez was born in Laredo, Tx., a single child, he grew up watching and finding his biggest escape into the world of film, which stayed with him throughout his youth and into his adulthood. Being from an immigrant and struggling family, he joined the Army, affording him the ability to go to college after completing his commitment. Twenty years later, David retired and was finally able to go to school and learn the craft of filmmaking. He could now add to the hands-on knowledge he had picked up while working on small independent film sets as well as online tutorials.
David graduated from The University of the Incarnate Word with a Master's of Arts degree in Communication with a focus on Production. He feels that to understand film and get a whole picture, a study in theory, is just as crucial as practical knowledge.
His first feature film, Lowriders vs. Zombies from Space, was an homage to cheesy, b-movie goodness inspired by many of the movies he loved growing up. He explained that by making this film, he not only made it a point to learn from every mistake possible that you shouldn't do for your first film but also introduced himself as a filmmaker into the community. The lessons learned and applied from the film are what is allowing him to continue filming and direct his second feature Sacred Mask.

Sacred Mask is an homage to the Lucha Libre films that my father would watch with me as I grew up as well as my tribute to his memory. The film portrays the duality of growing up Mexican-American as well as the symbolism of the mask and the importance of the world of Lucha and how much it is infused into our daily lives. At the end of the day, I just hope to entertain people and let them walk away with that same excitement I would have when watching the old films or going to the luchas on Sundays with my Dad.
