Anthony CareyDistributorCountry: Ireland
Anthony Carey is a practising artist and design instructor based in Dublin, Ireland. He is currently studying for a BA in Creative Arts with the Open College of Arts in the UK.
Incorporating drawing, painting, sculpture, photography and video into his practice allows him to explore different forms of connection and fragmentation, both social and personal, in an ongoing quest to distil the essence of the moment into distinctive visual remnants. Conceptual work has dictated a means to communicate internal dialogues on social and broader cultural issues and led Carey to create his debut micro-short. Anthony’s work has been shown both nationally and internationally, and his debut Story has been selected for inclusion in several upcoming international festivals.
“As an Irish artist, I wanted to make a statement about wider social issues and attitudes. Story deals with themes of homelessness, vulnerability, and mental health. In 1919 Ireland declared her Independence with the needs and welfare of the public taking priority. Walking the streets of my hometown, I see how much this has changed, and I find it upsetting to witness the lack of empathy shown to our homeless. Throughout its 60 seconds, words flash on the screen for approximately the time it takes to pass by someone in need. In one minute, an act of kindness as simple as ‘hello, how are you?’ can make a difference. In creating this one minute film, I hope to give the viewer pause for thought.”
