Sandie de Freitas is the founder and president of COMMFFEST GLOBAL COMMUNITY FILM FESTIVAL. The idea came whilst working at a film distribution organization in 1993 and seeing a great number of unappreciated films made by independent filmmakers being shelved and unavailable to the public.
Commffest started in 2005 and is now in its 16th year in downtown Toronto. As well as the film festival Sandie created Commffest TV an online radio show that speaks to the community on social and relevant issues as well as interviewing filmmakers, musicians and artists.
In 2011 Commffest World Music was created now in it’s 8th year as well as the prestigious annual Commffest Art Exhibition held at the famous Metro Hall Rotunda. In addition to being a Festival Director she is Writer/ Producer,/Director/Artist hailing from Seneca College with a Design Arts diploma which included TV. Productions. Her entrepreneurial skills were honed earlier on as the owner of a fashion boutique in Yorkville as well as a small marketing firm Telemark Communications. She recently won an award presented by the National Ethnic Press and media Council Of Canada and was asked to join their board as a vice director.
Sandie is from the island of Antigua & Barbuda in the West Indies and 2 years ago started the annual Commffest film festival there..several youth workshops were arranged and like the Canadian youth workshops they were very well attended..
Sandie has directed several documentaries for the homeless and women’s community groups and has recently written directed and produce her first feature film “St Lawrence” an 82m drama that portrays the struggles and triumphs of a filmmaker in just a position to that of a film festival organization.
