Director Statement

Moonlight Sonata was written by the internationally acclaimed poet Yiannis Ritsos in 1956 as the monologue/confession of an elderly woman (Woman in Black) who speaks to a young man while the full moon is out.
In our short film version, the monologue is split between two characters, a mother and a daughter who long to break free (each from her own state). The male presence is still here and still silent but the Husband's and the Young Man's actions/inactions can speak louder than words.
The idea of this claustrophobic story came to us after considering the basic themes of the original poem and how emotionally intense and moving it is for the reader. Regret, grief, fear of loneliness and death, repression, intense need for change, unity, freedom and love, do not see age. None of it makes discriminations.
When the dark descends, what does it take to escape and find your way into the light?
